Gourd and levels claws painted & mounted to Mesquite gnarl

Gourds are the oldest domesticated plant known to man. today many hobbyists and crafters turn them into bird houses. I guess this is my inhospitable version. :o)

I am fascinated by natural forms and the things I find in nature. the heart of each piece is in the found object itself and the ember of inspiration for each piece in the series. The background treatment represents the environment, namely, the Desert from which the pieces were found. the Turquoise sky, the crackled terracotta earth. You can’t replicate what the natural processes have done, I simply wish to make the viewer stop and wonder a moment at the form, the color the lines, the cracks & crevasses and details of each piece. Time is a medium as well in each piece of this series. no telling how long there’s things grew and flourished in the sun. What caused their demise? How long have they laid there in the west Texas sun, battered by wind and weather and fire? was it the home of some creature for a season? I really hope i’m not alone in the wonder I feel when I come upon such beautiful thing.
